When petty thief Olivier (played by a youthful Gérard Depardieu) breaks into an unassuming Parisian apartment, he accidentally enters the very private world of elite dominatrix Ariane (Bulle Ogier), who entertains clients in her secret black marble dungeon, hidden beneath her apartment. Olivier’s first fascination for Ariane soon turns to love, forcing him to question his assumptions about sex and power. Barbet Schroeder’s film featured graphic scenes of SM and fetishism and was restricted to a few club cinemas on its initial release. Presented here fully uncut, Maîtresse is a stylish love story, set in the secret world of a high-end Dominatrix. French language, with English subtitles, 113 minutes.
